QoG lunchseminarium med Rafael Vazquez

Seminarium

The QoG Institute regularly organizes seminars related to research on Quality of Government. The seminars address the theoretical and empirical problem of how political institutions of high quality can be created and maintained as well as the effects of Quality of Government on a number of policy areas, such as health, the environment, social policy, and poverty.

Speakers are invited from the international research community and experts from NGOs and other organizations to the lunch seminars. The seminars last for one hour and include a short presentation by the speaker (30-35 min) followed by a joint discussion about the topic.

If nothing else is indicated, the seminars are held in English.

Title:
"Participatory Politics as improving democratic representation: civil and civic disobedience"

Abstract:
Civic engagement seems to be absolutely necessary in order to go beyond the limitations of current disaffected representative democracies. Parliamentary representation by political parties appears to be insufficient to respond citizenship demands for a broader concept of democracy. As a response, citizens are more and more involved in other types of socio-political participation beyond the state and even beyond voluntary organizations and conventional forms.
In addition, all signs are that the world economy is undergoing transition that impacts the social structure in a fundamental way, and therein are the causes of mass protests seeking change. The effect of financial crisis and party politics on the grassroots mobilizations has originated an evident rise of social-protest and dissent movements in many parts of Europe (Greece, Spain, Italy...) and worldwide.
Starting from this point of view, this presentation will seek to analyze current state about the study of individual and collective protests with special focus on civil disobedience forms. Specifically, it will offer an open discussion (from a mainly theoretical approach) about why citizens move from being standard apathetic citizens to become more engaged protesters and real committed civic-disobedient citizens, and the consequences for the general theory of democracy.
