Instructions for online application at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Autumn/AY 2017-18

The following is for students nominated to spend the autumn term or full year under an exchange agreement with the Faculty of Social Sciences. All students nominated by the May 1st nomination deadline for an exchange semester/year at the Faculty of Social Sciences must fill in the online application form for exchange studies. The link on the right will take you to the online application registration page. The application is open from April 1st through May 15th. Students requiring a visa in Sweden can apply earlier.

The application period for courses in the autumn semester 2017 is between May 16th and May 31st. Between those dates, information will be sent to your e-mail. Updates and more information will be posted closer to that time in the link to the left, "Application to courses". NORDPLUS students should contact the host department international coordinator for specific information about course selection.

Please note that the application for student housing is a separate application. In order to apply you will need the information provided in your academic online application confirmation, which is the last page of the PDF of your online application. See Welcome Services for more information on student housing. You cannot apply for housing until you have submitted your online application.

General information

At any point in your application, you can go to any section by clicking on the page name in the menu on the left of the page. It is a good idea to click on the save progress button as you fill it out. You can log out of your application process at any time. You can return later to fill in the rest by using your username and password, so please make note of your log-in details. When you finish a section/page, tick the mark page as complete box. Follow the steps (1-3) below. Incorrect information can cause problems and delays with how your application is handled.

1. Create account

• Create a username and password. The password must be at least eight (8) characters long, and include at least one number (0 through 9) and one special character (~!#&$%*_-+=()[]:;’”<>?/^).
• After completion, press ‘Register’
• When logging in, you may need to reload a new CAPTCHA (the wavy code you type in).

 2. Fill out application

Portal

• Log in and read the portal information carefully.
• Note: the Faculty of Social Sciences in Swedish is Samhällsvetenskapliga fakulteten; it is shortened to SFS
• Start the application (Start new application). The application name is Application form Incoming students - HT 17/18.

Information
• Read the instructions before proceeding.

Personal information
• It is important that you fill in the correct email and postal address as we will use this data for all further communications. If you have a temporary address, please state until when it is valid. It is best to provide one permanent address where you can always receive information. Be sure your email address will not block emails from the university.
• If you already have a Swedish civic number, be sure to include it. Leave blank if you don't have a Swedish civic number (personnummer)
• Photo – jpg format.

Educational Background
• Country = where your home university is. Then select your home university from the Institution drop-down list
• In subject area, choose your main subject (i.e. major field of studies).


Details of stay
• Sub institution – choose Faculty of Social Sciences. This is important in order to be able to select courses later on, and to be sure your application is processed correctly.
• Stay type – choose "Studies" (only for a very few students is "Placement" is applicable).
• Framework – chooseBILATERAL Studies, ERASMUS Studies, ERASMUS ICM Studies, LP-SM, or NORDPLUS Studies as applicable. (LP=Linnaeus-Palme; Bilateral=non-other type of agreement; ERASMUS ICM = International Credit Mobility).
• Subject area - fill in your host department subject area (i.e.: Global Studies; Human Resource Management and Labour Relations; Journalism; Media and Communication Studies; Political Science; Psychology; Public Administration; Social Sciences; Social Work; Sociology; or Work Science). This is the department where your exchange agreement is held here.
• Preferred subject area/modules to study at host institution – similar to the list above (note: this is not a course selection, nor a guarantee of being able to take specific courses). You are expected to choose from within the Social Sciences course offering.
• Study level – choose “First cycle (BA)" or "Second cycle (MA)” depending on your planned level of study during your exchange.
• Academic year – pre-selected (2017/18)
• Start period – should be HT 2017/18 (HT = autumn semester; VT = spring semester). (Spring start? Please wait to apply in October/November.)
• Duration in months – for entire autumn semester, enter “5”; for the full academic year, put "9". If other arrangements have been made with your host department coordinator at the University of Gothenburg, specify as applicable.

Miscellaneous
• Language Level: self assessment; no further documentation is required by the Faculty of Social Sciences. Please also see the document “Information to partner universities regarding requirements”.
• Other fields as applicable.
Transcript is required for incoming students at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The documents should be in English and include grade scale and credit explanations. Master’s-level students - include both your undergraduate and current grade reports, plus (if available) your undergraduate degree. More than one document? Scan and upload as one file.
• NO portfolio or other documentation is needed or will be regarded for incoming students at the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Signature of the student: We will not give out your personal information to third parties, but will use it for purposes concerning your stay at the University of Gothenburg only.

3 Submit application
• Complete your application and review it carefully. You cannot make changes once you have submitted the application, so be sure it is correct. Click the submit button. Note: only when all required data is filled in and in the right formats will it submit successfully. If you made a mistake or have any further questions, please contact your departmental international coordinator for assistance.

After submitting your application you will see a link to be able to download a PDF of your application; this can take a few minutes to generate – especially if a lot of people are using the system. You can also log back in at any time to access (but not change) your application and the PDF. You may get an email confirmation, too. If you do not receive this, please check the Junk/Spam folder in your e-mail account. Note: the letter at the end of the PDF of your application is the same as the email; you don't need both.

The online application is all we need - please don't send a printed version.

 

Please note that the application for student housing is a separate application. In order to apply for housing you need your personal application number, which you'll find just above 'Personal Information' on your submitted application form.  For more information on housing, visit the Welcome Services site.
