EMOGU-seminar: Curiosity: An Affective Approach to Constructive Conflict

Seminarium

Elizabeth Olsson, School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg

Curiosity is often lauded as an "intellectual emotion", but few have explored its social function, let alone how it affects interpersonal conflict. In this paper, I combine intrapersonal and interpersonal theories of curiosity to investigate how actors use it to handle conflicts in mutually beneficial ways. My empirical data draws from extensive participant observation of interactions inside of one of the most conflict-prone contexts imaginable: the primary school classroom. I use this data to demonstrate how teachers employ curiosity to frame conflicts as advantageous, to stimulate productive conflict engagement among their students, and to transform potentially destructive situations into opportunities for positive change and development.
