For countries in the global south, extractive industries can provide governments with a highway to economic development. However, in a unique and understudied phenomenon, seven local communities in Colombia have organised referendums as a result of which resource extraction has been halted altogether in their municipalities.

Lecturer: Nicolás Acosta is a cultural anthropologist. His work focuses on the political ecology of development, ecotourism, and biodiversity conservation on local, Afro-descendant, and indigenous peoples. He received his doctorate from the University of Oulu, Finland, and is a Marie Curie Fellow at the School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
