CeCAR Seminar with Paul Bain

Research profile seminar

Paul Bain, will present the paper: "Linking collective action to perceptions of societal change: Worldviews, utopias, and our collective futures".

Action to promote social change is directed - people act on their ideas of the changes they want to see in society, or the type of society they want to live in. In this talk I will describe three research programs aimed at deepening our understanding of the ideas people hold about societal change. The first program examines people´s general beliefs or "worldviews" about how society is changing. The second focuses on their conceptions of "utopia" - their ideals for themselves and society. The third investigates the specific changes in society they expect from shifts in politics, policies, or demographics ("collective futures"). In each program we aim to identify the most important beliefs for motivating personal action or support/opposition to public policies. In doing this I will focus on the ideas about societal change that may be effective in promoting more sustainable living.
