Higher Semiinar - Figurational perspective in studying family and personal relationships: theoretical, methodological, and empirical considerations

Research profile seminar

In this paper, I outline the main principles of the figurational approach in studying family and personal relationships. The approach draws from two traditions: from the figurational sociology of Norbert Elias (1897-1990) and from social network analysis (SNA). For Elias, the notion of figuration highlighted the webs of interdependence in which people live, many of which are obscure to people themselves. The qualitative social network analysis, on the other hand, aims at a systematic analysis of these webs to unravel the relational constraints influencing people¿s everyday life. In the talk, I will give examples from empirical studies of family relationships in different situations: in the early phase of the family career, in transition to parenthood, and post-separation.
