QoG lunch seminar with Ignacio Sanchez

Research profile seminar

The QoG Institute regularly organizes seminars related to research on Quality of Government, broadly defined as trustworthy, reliable, impartial, uncorrupted and competent government institutions. The seminars address the theoretical and empirical problem of how political institutions of high quality can be created and maintained as well as the effects of Quality of Government on a number of policy areas, such as health, the environment, social policy, and poverty.

The seminars are in English if nothing else is indicated.

Title:
Early and Late Democratizers

Abstract:
Modernization theory is usually formulated in a-historical terms, establishing a general relationship between the variables that capture the modernization process (income, education, urbanization, industrialization) and the political regime. Based on recent literature that posits a conditional effect of modernization on democracy, this article makes a distinction between early and late democratizers and argues that the political consequences of modernization are historically bounded: while modernization has strong explanatory power with regard to early democratizers, it is largely irrelevant for late ones. As democracy becomes entrenched in the world order, the effect of modernization variables wane and international factors gain preeminence. I show this interactive effect between domestic and international factors analyzing a comprehensive panel of countries for the period 1800-2015, with continuous as well as discrete indicators of democracy.
