Before you apply - important deadlines, steps, and information

1. Does an agreement exist?
Check first with your home university if an Erasmus, Nordplus/Nordlys or other agreement exists and how the selection of students is made.

2. Apply to your home university
When your home university's selection procedure is done, and you have been offered a place and decided to accept it, the international coordinator/international office at your home university must nominate you to us. This is done by your home university, which sends the receiving department at University of Gothenburg a nomination by e-mail  (cc: exchange@samfak.gu.se). The e-mail should include the nominee's name, e-mail address, study level, start term and number of terms nominated, and the agreement nominated under (programme, subject/department).

Nomination deadlines are:

  • May 1st for the autumn semester or full year
  • November 1st for the spring semester

3. Once nominated - apply online for exchange studies
The University of Gothenburg uses an online application for exchange students. Please note that you must be nominated by your home university before you can apply to us. For the link to the on-line form, see "Application instructions" in the menu to the left.

The application deadlines are:

  • May 15th for autumn semester/academic year (opens March 1st)
  • November 15th for spring semester (opens September 1st)

There are application instructions that are specific for the Faculty of Social Sciences. Please read these carefully (see "Application instructions" in the menu to the left).

The application form must be completed and submitted on time in order for you to select courses and receive a letter of acceptance.

 4. Apply for courses at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Information on courses is typically updated in March or April for the following academic year. Changes may be then made on a rolling basis as needed.

Course application deadlines

The deadlines for applying to Faculty of Social Sciences first and second cycle courses are (subject to change):

  • May 31st for autumn term/academic year (opens May 16th)
  • November 30th for spring term (open November 16th): these dates are subject to change!

Exchange students are guaranteed* a seat in the Faculty's courses

Important note: No applications for studies or courses will be considered until we have received the official nomination from your home university that you have been selected and accepted to come to the Faculty of Social Sciences or one of its departments under an active exchange agreement.  Your exchange and application are not approved until officially accepted by the host department at University of Gothenburg.

* The 30 credit guarantee only applies to courses in the First cycle, full study pace, and for students arriving on first cycle agreements with the Faculty of Social Sciences or one of its departments. Changes after deadline of application are not possible.

Information to partner universites regarding requirements.

However, we cannot guarantee specific courses or subject areas. Each course has a maximum number of participants, and some are quite small. Therefore, it is important to provide a first and second choice for every period.

It is NOT advisable to study more than one course during the same period, since lectures might collide and the workload would be too heavy.

In the event more students choose a specific course than there are spots, priority will be given to students arriving on an agreement with the department giving the course.
All courses in the first cycle (undergraduate level) offered by the faculty are listed under the link "First Cycle Courses" in the menu to the left.

Please note, too, that existing courses may, for various reasons, be withdrawn from the list, while new courses may be added. We will, of course, attempt to keep visiting students informed of such changes.

For students coming for the full academic year, be advised that many of the courses held in the autumn semester are repeated in the spring; this may restrict some of your choices.

Second Cycle Courses

In the menu to the left you will also find courses in the second cycle (graduate level). This is only applicable for students where the agreement specifies that the exchange may be at the second cycle (graduate) level. Please note that you need a bachelor or equivalent to be able to apply for these courses. Also it is required that you fulfill the specific pre-requisites for each course. The general admission clause does not apply for exchange students within the Second Cycle. More information about courses in the second cycle can be found under the link "Second Cycle Courses".

Be sure to upload your supporting documentation proving that you fulfill the requirements in the Second Cycle in your online application (undergraduate grade report; proof of undergraduate degree; grade and/or registration report at graduate level).

Other courses

You may apply to one course (7,5 credits, or, exceptionally, 15 credits) offered at another faculty. However, you are not guaranteed a seat in those courses. Therefore, in your learning agreement, you should give priority to the courses offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences, since the exchange agreement has been signed between your home university and a department at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Gothenburg.

Nordplus students

Students arriving on Nordplus agreements are primarily to take courses given in Swedish (or at the graduate/second cycle level). Please contact your host department coordinator to access this curriculum.
