Application for exchange studies

If you have been nominated by your home university to spend an exchange semester/year under an exchange agreement with the Faculty of Social Sciences, the next step is to submit your online application! All nominated students must fill in the online application form.

Autumn semester / full academic year: The application is open from March 1 - May 15.

Spring semester: The application is open from September 1 - November 15.

Application instructions for incoming exchange students at the Faculty of Social Sciences

Before you start filling in your application, read the instructions carefully.


Step 1

Click on the link "Apply here" and start fill in the form. Fill in all required fields carefully. Fields marked with a star "*" are mandatory. Click on the question marks for explanations in the application form.


Personal data

  • Email - It is important that you fill in a correct email address, as we will use this data for all further communications. Be sure your email address will not block emails from the university.

Data concerning your current studies

  • Study field - choose your main subject (i.e. major field of studies).

Data concerning your exchange studies

  • Study level - choose depending on your planned level of study during your exchange.
  • Faculty - select SFS - Faculty of Social Sciences. This is important in order to be able to select courses later on, and to be sure your application is processed correctly.
  • Duration in months - for one entire semester, put “5”; for the full academic year, put “9”. If you have made special arrangements with your host department at the University of Gothenburg, fill in the appropriate number of months.
  • Study field - fill in your host department/study field i.e. Global Studies, Human Resource Management and Labour Relations, Journalism, Media and Communication Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Social Sciences, Social Work, Sociology, or Work Science).
  • Subject you want to study at this institution – Indicate the subject/-s you are interested to study at the Faculty of Social Sciences during your exchange. Most students take classes from a variety of the study fields above, so you can name more than one. (This does not guarantee class availability.)
  • Language level - Use the Self assessment grid to self-assess your language proficiency. No further documentation is required by the Faculty of Social Sciences.   • Special needs - If you have any special needs, you can inform us in this field. (For information about special pedagogical support at the University of Gothenburg, read more here.)
  • Do you want to apply for housing? – If you want to apply for housing, make sure to answer this question!

Step 2

After all the fields has been filled in and you pushed the button "Send application" you will recieve an email with further instructions. (If you do not receive this, check the Junk/Spam folder in your e-mail account.) The email contains a link to follow to register to Mobility Online and finish the application. Follow the link in the mail and create an account with a user name and a password.

Step 3

After you create an account you get an email with a link to your account. Here are some final steps. Start with the "Complete Personal Details" and follow the workflow and upload your Transcript of records. This is the only mandatory document(s) required for incoming students at the Faculty of Social Sciences. NOTE: The documents should be in English, include courses, grade scale, and credit explanations. Master’s-level students - include both your undergraduate and current grade reports, plus (if available) your undergraduate degree. More than one document? Scan and upload as one file.

No portfolio is needed or will be regarded for incoming students at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

After you have completed the personal details you will get an email with your application in PDF. All documents are optional to upload in the system, except the Transcript.

Step 4: Submit application

There is no button for submitting the application. After you uploaded the Transcript of records the application is automatically submitted and your host department will start handling your application. The online application is all we need – please don’t send a printed version.

Housing application

Please note that the application for student housing is integrated in the online application. If you want to apply for student housing, make sure to answer “Yes” to this question under “Data concerning your exchange study”. More information on housing


Once you have submitted you online application it is no longer possible to make any changes. If you made a mistake or have any questions regarding your application, please contact your host department
