Second Cycle/Postgraduate Courses

The Faculty of Social Sciences offers many courses in English in the second cycle (postgraduate/master level). These are open for both Swedish and international students, i.e. exchange students and freemovers. Exchange students applying for second cycle courses need a bachelor or equivalent. If you do not have this, you should only choose courses in the first cycle (undergraduate level). Most of the second cycle courses are given within a master programme. Especially in the spring, classes will have pre-requisites at the master level. Courses are subject to a minimum number of participants and may be withdrawn if there aren't enough students. These courses also have a limited number of seats open to exchange students. For these reasons, it is very important to note a second choice when selecting courses.

You can find the list of courses offered below, divided by term.

Courses offered for the following academic year are usually published here in late March/early April.

Course details - syllabus/literature list

Use the course name or code to search the course syllabus database for a syllabus or literature list. Each syllabus includes course objectives, pre-requisites, and more. Note that these documents may be updated closer to the start of the class. In the course lists below you will reach each course syllabus directly by clicking on the course code.

Pre-requisites

Many of these second cycle courses have pre-requisites. During the spring semester, most of the classes have pre-requisites that you've already earned credits at the master level. This means that you may need not only an undergraduate degree, but also at least 15.0 credits in a related field at the master level. This is why we ask for your undergraduate and current transcripts, including information about any courses you plan to have completed before your exchange starts.

Providing academic results/transcripts

You need to include your academic results from your home university with your application if you will apply for Second Cycle courses. The documentation can be sent electronically, as long as the document is an official statement. You may need to show the documentation in person later on so bring them with you for your exchange. Please upload your supporting documentation proving that you fulfill the requirements in the Second Cycle to your online application. Documents received after that time should be sent to courses@samfak.gu.se.

Other admissions and credit information

Important note: No applications will be considered until we have received an official nomination from your home university that you have been selected and accepted to come to Faculty of Social Sciences or one of its departments on a current exchange programme. The 30 credit guarantee only applies to courses in the first cycle, and for students arriving on agreements at the first cycle level with the Faculty of Social Sciences or one of its departments.
